Phoenix in History

The scrolls herein contain not only the history of Elanthia as passed down through the ages, but the place the great House of the Rising Phoenix has held throughout that history.

VI. B. The Council of Light

Seemingly one dark night an unknown man entered the Cemetary located near Darkstone Bay as its called today. The gates of the ancient Necropolis hadnt been breached in ages and many were terrifed to go near it or even speak of it, but this mysterious soul easily passed by its gates, some would claim was even welcomed.

"...and the coming of the Unlife may take many forms. Some may garb themselves in shapes of terror and evil and dwell in the forgotten places of the world and in the realm of the dead. Others may come among you with secret words of power and mystic symbols to lure even those who would fight hardest against them."
-Loremaster Axxon

Now the cults had never died out, but they had waned in the many hundred years since the Age of Chaos, but somehow the descendants of the Organization that Bandur Etrevion had helped establish in this region still existed.

Members of these Cults sought power. For what purpose one never can truly know, but the Unlife was always a quick way to accomplish these aims. Those who attempt to wield the Unlife must allow this foul corruption to course through their bodies—ultimately destroying them unless they make the ultimate sacrifice, the transition to become an Undead. This isn't information you want to tell prospective members so cults dedicated to the Unlife have always disguised their intentions. Instead they make claims to be of the Light, or seekers of knowledge until they were are satisfied that the poor fools were completely in their thrall, at which point they sprang the bad news on them. For those who can survive the Unlife and the cost of its power for a time will constantly have to struggle with their very existence as the basis of their magic corrupts and befouls their own bodies. This pox on their souls is not easily removed.

"All knowledge is heresy. Yes, you heard me correctly. It is the nature of dark religions to thrive on ignorance."
-LoreMaster Andraax

There was always some who knew the price of power and willingly chose to accept the thait that cursed their souls for what the Unlife offered. They would thereby seek to give their souls away or had the naivity to believe they could hold sway over the darkness, others in hopes of becoming powerful channels for the Unlife. Little do these people realize how little the Unlife cares for them, but these powers granted are often greater than any they might find elsewhere and there seems to be no shortage of willing participants. There is no denying that the shortest and quickest path to power is through the Dark Path, and often it is those who are quickest to pledge themselves over to such "Dark Masters" that end up being enslaved wholly.

Shortly after the odd man entering the Crypt an Organization began to grow quickly and with a fervor until it had a large following under the direction of a new "Dark Master", it is unknown who exactly the "Dark Master" was, but early rumors speculated Bandur himself had returned. Born again, a cult of the Unlife, but it would go by a new name hoping to lure those foolish enough to believe its false message. The group came to be known as The Council of Light and the temptation of its promised power would spread like wildfire through Wehnimer's Landing.
